After attending Dr. Davis' seminar I started doubting my decision to go with the lap band as he was definitely pro-gastric bypass. So........ I did what I always do - decided to do some more research.
I don't know anyone personally who has been banded, but I know at least 6 people who have had the gastric bypass so I sat down with each of them one-on-one and grilled them with questions.
No, it is not the "perfect" surgery - none of them are and they all have their drawbacks. But not one single person would trade their issues they had to deal with after GB for being fat again. None had any regrets.
I also started looking at the long term results of lap band and the story wasn't too good. Most of those posting on lapbandtalk were banded in the last 18 months or so. When I looked at the "complications" and "life after band removal" boards the story was markedly different.
Some had problems from their very first fill, but a lot were successful for the first 2-3 years and then developed problems with the band - slippage, erosion, getting food stuck every day, throwing up every day. A lot had gone from a healthy diet with limited portions (which is what the band is supposed to do) to eating ice cream because that is all they could get down.
I decided to take the plunge and go with the gastric bypass. I do not want something reversible as I do not want to be fat again.
My follow-up appt with the nutritionist and psych-eval is Feb 11. I found out my insurance does not require a 3 or 6-month dr. supervised diet - yay! So I hope to have my surgery sometime in March.
